Ingredients

  • Crisco® All-Vegetable Shortening
  • 1 1/2 C. plain yellow cornmeal
  • 2/3 C. all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tbsp. Clabber Girl® Baking Powder
  • 1 1/2 tsps. salt
  • 1 tsp. Spice Islands® Garlic Powder
  • 2 tsps. Spice Islands® Onion Powder
  • 1/2 tsp. sugar
  • 1 C. buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 green onions

Directions

  1. HEAT enough shortening to have 2-3 inches once melted to 360°F in a deep fryer or heavy deep saucepan.
  2. COMBINE cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, onion powder and sugar in medium bowl. Add buttermilk, eggs and onions. Mix well.
  3. DROP batter by tablespoonfuls into hot oil. Fry a few hush puppies at a time, 5 to 6 minutes, or until deep golden brown. Remove with slotted spoon. Drain on paper towels. Keep warm. Repeat with remaining batter. Serve immediately.
