Tempura Onion Straws with Zesty Ketchup

Ingredients

  • 1 large onion
  • Packaged tempura batter mix
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. Spice Islands® Cayenne Pepper
  • Crisco® Pure Canola Oil
  • Salt
  • ZESTY KETCHUP
  • 1/2 C. ketchup
  • 1 tsp. hot sauce
  • 1 1/2 tsps. prepared horseradish

Directions

  1. SLICE onion in half lengthwise, then crosswise into 1/4-inch slices. Prepare enough tempura mix according to package directions to yield about 1 1/2 cups. Stir in salt, pepper and cayenne pepper. Refrigerate at least 30 minutes.
  2. HEAT oil to a depth of 3 inches in 4-quart saucepan or deep fryer. Heat to 375ºF. Dip onion pieces in tempura batter, letting excess drip back into bowl.
  3. FRY a few at a time in hot oil 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden brown, turning two or three times. Drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with salt . Serve immediately with Zesty Ketchup.
