Ingredients
- 1 ½ C. all-purpose flour
- 2 Tbsp. cornmeal
- 1 Tbsp. granulated sugar
- ½ C. Clabber Girl® Corn Starch
- 1 tsp. Clabber Girl® Baking Powder
- ¾ tsp. coarse salt
- ¾ tsp. Clabber Girl® Baking Soda
- ½ tsp. Spice Islands® Thyme
- ½ C. shredded or chopped gouda cheese
- 1 C. shredded, peeled Granny Smith apple
- 1 ¾ C. buttermilk
- 3 eggs
- ½ C. Crisco® Pure Vegetable Oil
- Crisco® Original or Butter Flavor No-Stick Cooking Spray
Directions
- Preheat waffle iron.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cornmeal, sugar, corn starch, baking powder, salt, baking soda and thyme.
- In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, eggs, oil, cheese and apple.
- Pour the liquid mixture into the bowl of dry ingredients and stir to combine. Do not overmix.
- Spray the waffle iron with Crisco® No-Stick Spray.
- Pour batter onto the preheated waffle iron and cook as directed by your waffle iron. Spray each time before adding the waffle batter.
- Remove from waffle iron and place on a wire rack.
HELPFUL TIPS
TIP: Place a wire rack on a sheet pan and keep it in an oven on 200° F to keep the waffles warm.
Serving suggestion: top with cooked, crumbled bacon and hot honey
